The Challenge: How do you inspire social care staff to lead more active lives and exercise more?
This was the challenge tackled by Active Teams in partnership with Active Calderdale for staff within the Personalised Long-Term Support Team in Calderdale Council.
Social care staff provide support to people aged 65+ and, if these employees can be encouraged to be more physically active, they are in turn more likely to encourage their clients to lead more active lives.
Our MoveMore team challenge engaged six groups of employees in a friendly competition to be the team with the most ‘Minutes of Movement’.
The MoveMore challenge is highly inclusive, allowing staff to join in anywhere, at any time, and with their preferred form of movement, including walking. We ensured success with a challenge launch, supporting setup sessions and regular encouragement and cheerleading throughout. So just how good were the results?
Active Teams transformed the activity habits of PLTS Calderdale employees, achieving a 190% increase in monthly Minutes of Movement.
Staff members more than doubled their normal daily activity levels, averaging 33 heart-strengthening, illness-reducing, cost-saving, mood-improving, brain-enhancing, and team-connecting Minutes of Movement each day.
This was an increase of 18 minutes of daily movement per employee, compared to the previous period. Overall staff achieved an average of 230 Movement Minutes per week which is 80 minutes higher than the NHS activity and exercise standard for employees.
During the 28-day MoveMore Challenge, we achieved:
Research shows that employees who achieve the NHS standard, experience up to 30% reduced anxiety and stress levels.
Organisations whose employees meet this standard report 27% lower sickness absence, improved retention & higher productivity.
In a short period, Active Teams has already driven a 48% increase in the time PLTS staff spend being active and exercising.
Some friendly competition in the workplace is a great way to get people moving and has a huge impact on employee wellbeing.
The impact on the PLTS Team in the last 12 months is staggering. One team member, who wouldn’t previously consider going for a short walk at lunchtime, is now heading off to walk around her local reservoir bright and early on a Saturday morning! Staff have seen the benefits of being more physically active and are integrating this into their daily lives.
Working with Active Teams is such a positive experience for everyone involved - the process is very easy. What a great outcome and a shining example of what can be achieved (with a little healthy competition!).

I've loved doing Active Teams! I found it really helped the team to be more active. As a social work team, we already recognise the importance of promoting physical activity with the people we work with, however it was refreshing for us to focus on our own activity levels.
I personally found the challenges inspiring, fitting in additional walks and short bursts of activity. Active Teams has supported me in my fitness goals - I've lost weight, and I'm happier, less stressed and stronger than I have ever been. It's been lovely to get support from my team members and it's opened up conversations we wouldn't normally have at work. I'd recommend Active Teams to everyone.

Prior to joining Active Teams I very rarely exercised but, with some persuasion from the team, I decided to sign up. The team challenges really motivated me in trying to build up points for my team.
I have seen a huge difference in the team since we started these Active Teams challenges. We have been out on walks at lunchtime and used the exercise bikes in the office. We have all made a conscious effort to join in with the challenges and add in those extra minutes to build up points, even whilst I was on holiday in Japan!
