How do you maintain team connections and combat sedentary behaviour in a hybrid digital agency where collaboration is crucial?
This was the challenge posed by true Digital. With 35 highly skilled staff working across cross-disciplinary teams, they needed to:
Active Teams developed a comprehensive program that balances virtual engagement with in-person connection.
Team Connection: Regular virtual challenges and expeditions tap into true’s competitive spirit, with winning teams earning team lunches. These challenges create natural opportunities for cross-team interaction while getting staff moving and exercising more.
Team Experiences: A programme of taster sessions introducing staff to non-traditional activities like roller skating, paddle boarding, padel, and salsa. These sessions build relationships through shared experiences while giving staff the chance to explore fun and accessible ways to move.
Staff activity levels have increased by an impressive 141% since starting the program, with an exceptional 94% of employees participating.
The key to success has been creating a program that makes movement both fun and social. The combination of competitive challenges and team experiences has proven highly effective. Around a third of staff regularly join taster sessions, with demand for new experiences growing.
Whether through friendly team competition or shared new experiences, true now has a culture where staying active is a natural part of working life.
This dual approach has delivered significant results:
Through Active Teams, true has achieved a 141% increase in the time true employees spend being active and exercising.
Active Teams has brought something different to true - a way to get people moving and connecting beyond their day-to-day teams. The challenges really spark engagement and conversation, and the social activities like paddle boarding and roller skating have created some brilliant team moments.
What's really impressive is how naturally it's become part of our culture. Whether people are in the office or working remotely, there's always something going on that brings people together. In an industry where we need to look after our talent and their wellbeing, Active Teams has become an essential part of how we do things at true.

Since true partnered with Active Teams, it has become an essential part of my exercise routine and a key motivator. Before joining Active Teams, I exercised sporadically without clear goals or tracking, and I didn’t realise how much more valuable it could be to see real-time data, Active Team's integration with Strava is super helpful here.
Active Teams has also inspired me to explore new activities. I joined the virtual yoga sessions last year, which led me to join a yoga studio in Bristol, where I now regularly attend yoga and Pilates classes.
Active Teams has made me more aware of my activity levels, especially while home working. I’ve replaced bus rides with walking to work most days - a small change that significantly boosts my step count and improves my mental wellbeing. One thing I have learned is how motivating some friendly competition is, the Active Teams challenges have pushed me the extra mile - literally and figuratively!
